Scholarly Saturday- The #Healing Power of #Music

For those of you who follow me on Twitter and Facebook,  you know on 7/3 and 7/5 I was out enjoying Phish here in Saratoga Springs, NY. Tonight is no exception because I am sitting on my deck listening to a great Phish show (7/20/13 is great if you are into that sort of thing). Phish and tons of other music are a large part of my life and have spilled over to my social work practice.

This was my inspiration to look up research on music therapy. The work of Deloach-Walworth (2005) not only describes music therapy as effective, but also cost-effective. It demonstrates how the use of music therapy, in some procedures, eliminated the use of patient sedation, reduced  procedural times, and decreased the number of staff members present for procedures.

I like this article because I am always talking about how we have to find programs that are not only work but meet the bottom line. This is a great example…
