A 6 year old client I work with got really agitated during a home visit but quickly sat down on a pile of his stuffed animals. He subsequently started doing deep breathing and was drawing squares in the air. His school psychologist taught him this technique called “square breathing.” He said he “really likes it” and I have never heard about it before today.
The Elementary School Counseling Blog has instructions and a graphic that are both perfect (and their Google Search came up first 🙂 ) I like the variation that this young man that I work with used. The combination of movement and breathing really works for him. I hope this works for you or someone you know.
