In the last 24 hours I came across two really awesome examples of youth empowerment and engagement.
The first was last evening’s #PTchat on Twitter engaging youth about the education process. Overall this is a great weekly chat to join as an educator or advocate for education. This week’s chat involved a live google hangout with students discussing the importance of student engagement and strategies to increase it. I found some of these principles discussed helpful for social work agencies to potentially engage with youth.
The other was a story by education advocate Diane Ravitch (an essential follow for folks involved in youth and education). Included in the story is a video of youth protesting a screening of a movie that is pro-charter school, anti-public school, anti-teacher union. Almost 50 years to the day that Dr. Martin Luther King received the Nobel Peace Prize, he would have been proud to see this. It is truly inspiring.
