You may have seen this story about a 17 year-old female in Connecticut refusing chemotherapy citing that she did not want her quality of life to be interrupted. The state supreme court ruled that she is to receive forced treatment of chemo. To complicate things her mother was also in support of this young lady not getting chemo-therapy; citing that is was “poison” in her body.
I expressed on twitter that I was “stuck” on this issue and Jennifer Chevinsky provided me with “Minor’s Refusal of Life Saving Therapies“. This provides a concise summary of case law related to this issue. It is in plain language so many disciplines can review it. This is an interesting issue about choice, ethics, being 17, quality of life, and “the right to die.” What are your thoughts?
