For me Social Work Month usually just came and went. But this year was little different. This March was a busy month for me professionally but I started this blog and being on social media. The inspiration for the blog is the tiny “fishbowl” of space with five other community-based children’s case managers. In times of stress we support each other, problem solve, laugh, share resources, vent our anger, and eat (sometimes). Little did I know this discourse already existed through websites like WordPress, Facebook, Twitter etc..
Since joining social media, Social Work Month has meant a lot more to me. I usually went to work and came home and retreated back into my own world. But now I have realized we have a lot to celebrate locally and globally. Social work does not just take place in our own space, like my little fishbowl; it takes place all over the world. It has been eye opening to hear about how different countries (and even states) are attacking social work problems. I’ve already read a ton of stuff from other disciplines and consumers that can be helpful. Reading about England, Peru, and other areas of the world has been amazing. I did not realize that there were so many great voices and resources already. I have enjoyed this journey so far, and I hope to bring mine and others’ perspectives worldwide for us to stay “Stuck” (passionate about our work) and get “Unstuck” (eliminate that feeling of giving up on ourselves and our clients).
