This week I was reminded by a colleague on twitter about the importance of prevention and early intervention in mental health.  No book does a better job arguing a case for this than the above book. Drawing on the work of the Adverse Childhood Experience Studies or (A.C.E.’s), this book thoroughly explains the development and long term impact of trauma on healthcare.

If you work with children, this is essential to understanding the need to have a more preventive focus. It also explains the neuroscience of trauma so well.  If you work with adults, it gives one insight to the difficulty for people who have experienced trauma to “suck it up”. There is significant chemical changes that happened early on that are not easily “fixed” or “cured”.  This is an essential book for anyone in human services and healthcare.
